Black Girl Gamers is a multi-platform online gaming community of over 8,000 black women that share a passion for gaming.
Jay-Anne Lopez, the creator of BGG, was inspired to create a safe gaming community for black women after being exposed to negativity surrounding her race and gender in the gaming world as a child.
Not only are they not welcomed in the gaming community because they are women, they are also not taken seriously by other gamers, the majority of whom are white men. These feelings of being out of place, and misrepresented created the need for change.
Black Girl Gamers has developed a community where the members uplift and support each other while playing games. Members live stream regularly on the streaming platform Twitch, and then upload their streams to Youtube. The community helps young black women overcome online hate, encourages girls to game, and inspires change throughout the gaming industry by partnering up with other brands that emphasize diversity and change.
How might we make BGG feel like a party, group, and family?
How might we make the existing community bigger and stronger?
How might we make gaming female dominated?
How might we make the gaming community a safer space for black women?
How might we remove hostile feelings of exclusivity from teh gaming community?
BBG Station is here to bring the community, positivity, and fun of BGG out of the digital world and into real life.
With the help of our company partner Playstation, BGG is creating physical spaces full of the latest gaming technology. At BGG Station, you can play games, meet and hang out with new friends and experience a sense of communtiy that is just for you.
